What a kitchen remodel costs in Dallas–Fort Worth

Kitchen remodel prices online run from a few thousand dollars to six figures, which isn't much help when you're trying to decide whether to call anyone. Here's how the cost breaks down for the kind of houses most people in Dallas–Fort Worth live in: a 1970s–2000s slab home with a kitchen that's never been fully redone.

Three levels of scope

A refresh keeps the cabinets and replaces what sits on and around them — counters, backsplash, sink, faucet, lighting, and paint. If the cabinet boxes are solid, this typically runs $12,000–$30,000 and changes the room more than people expect.

A full remodel on the same layout replaces cabinets, counters, backsplash, lighting, and usually flooring, but leaves the sink, range, and walls where they are. That's typically $35,000–$75,000, with cabinet grade as the biggest swing.

A layout change moves plumbing or gas, removes a wall, or re-plans the room entirely. Expect $60,000–$120,000 or more, because you're paying for structural work, trades, and inspections on top of finishes.

Where the money goes

In most remodels, cabinets and counters account for roughly half the budget. Labor across all trades is the next largest share. Appliances are usually separate, and are the easiest place to control spending without changing the room.

What moves the number most

Moving the sink to an island means cutting the slab for a drain — a real cost in a slab house. Removing a load-bearing wall means an engineered beam and a permit. By contrast, choosing quartz over granite, or a different backsplash tile, usually moves the total by less than people think.

How to keep a remodel on budget

Decide and order cabinets, counters, and fixtures before demolition, so the kitchen isn't torn out while you wait on deliveries. Get a written scope that names materials and allowances. And ask how surprises behind the walls will be handled before you sign — older homes almost always have one or two.
